摘      要:

The mechanism for regulating sleep and wakefulness has attracted the attention of researchers due to its significance in maintaining normal development, stabilizing various metabolic functions, and improv- ing the body’s immunity. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model to replicate the circadian and ultradian rhythms in sleep. The new sleep model incorporates three ’flip-flop’ switches between wakeful- ness (Wake), rapid eye movement (REM), and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. By applying linear stability analysis to the new model with net drives, we discover the existence of two distinct node-saddle bifurcations. One controls the transition between wakefulness and sleep, while the other regulates the cycle of NREM sleep and REM sleep. Furthermore, the hysteresis loops induced by these two saddle-node bifurcations contribute to the mechanism governing circadian and ultradian rhythms.  Finally, we successfully replicate normal sleep with a 24-hour circadian rhythm and a 1.5-hour ultradian rhythm, which aligns with actual data. This replication is achieved under the influence of circadian and ultradian drives, as well as the homeostatic process with appropriate parameters.
